Old Fashioned Cedar Lined Butternut Hope Chest Reproduction

Early Americana Styled Furniture by Delnero Rustic Furniture
Custom Made Handcrafted Furniture
I wanted to build my daughter Rebecca a special hope chest for her 16th birthday. While designing a piece that spoke of rustic Americana decor,
I was drawn to thoughts of earlier generations. Thoughts of how my father had instilled in us the worth of hand crafting quality, and the love
of our profession.
He and Becca were very close, and his passing was a hard thing for her. Dad (Poppy) had passed just 1 year before we moved from Southampton, Mass. to Danube, N.Y. Just hours before we closed on the house, Becca and I decided that we needed to take that panel with us. I built a replacement and switched them out, and gave Becca Poppy's panel.
The thought of incorporating that panel into this hope chest came to me. The left panel in the lid is Poppy's signed panel which can be read when she lifts the lid. I signed the one on the right.
The chest section of the piece was built with dove tail construction. The chest was lined with aromatic cedar harvested from our old Southampton property. The drawer is also lined in cedar.
Poppy's inscription. What makes this extra special is, though Dad hand built hundreds of pieces in his time, he only signed a small handful of them.
We sign every piece built by Delnero Family Furniture Co., including the names of our clients that commission the work.
Family History
Dad lost a leg in 1984, and was unable to work in the shop, but insisted on helping Mary and I build our home in 1987. He built the hundreds of wainscoting raised panels for our home, and while helping us install them, I jokingly told him he needed to sign one of the panels so two-hundred years from then when someone was restoring our home, they would know who built the paneling. He did sign one, and thinking it would be buried in the wall forever, he did so in a manner to make us laugh! Instead of sticking that panel in just any wall, I placed it in our dining room wall that was next to the cellar stairs so it could be viewed from the back. Dad laughed and said "you got me!"He and Becca were very close, and his passing was a hard thing for her. Dad (Poppy) had passed just 1 year before we moved from Southampton, Mass. to Danube, N.Y.
